Timeless Pursuit

Jerry BridgesI was a little apprehensive when Christopher (NavMedia Manager) first mentioned that he was in the process of bringing Jerry Bridges here in August-September to minister to the Body of Christ in Singapore. I first heard of Mr Bridges and read a number of his book in the 70s as a young believer. I wondered how the new generation would take to a man who is almost in his 80s.

I decided to re-read his books (The Pursuit of Holiness and The Discipline of Grace) and also did a little research on him to discover that …

  • Mr Bridges has written more than 30 books - his books revolve around the subject of Knowing and Pursuing God, Grace, the Gospel - It’s amazing how someone could keep writing about the same subject for over 30 years! He obviously has something to say
  • In 2004, Dick Staub in a ChristianityToday interview with the author said, “Jerry Bridges is still pursuing Holiness”
  • Mr Bridges preaches the gospel to himself everyday - he said that Gospel is as much for believers as it is for non-believers.
  • Without the hype and feel good pitch, he explains the gospel simply and clearly from Scripture
  • Random House, Inc. the world’s largest English-language general trade book publisher, in their website wrote, “Jerry Bridges is one of the most widely recognized and trusted Christian writers today… His first book, The Pursuit of Holiness, is a modern classic with sales over one million copies.
  • His book The Discipline of Grace is winner of the ECPA Gold Medallion award
  • The Practice of Godliness has been honored as well with sales of more than 400,000 copies (and counting)
  • Equipping Leaders for Asia says, Jerry takes holiness out of the realm of the impossible and brings it into “the real world” of our daily lives and decisions

Missions Director Yap Kim Meng’s heartbeat for the Jerry Bridges conference resonates with me:

  1. Pray that Jerry Bridge will be used by the Lord to bring about a renewed Holy Spirit empowered prompting to speak to the hearts of many here with regards for the need on ‘The Pursuit of Holiness’
  2. Pray that besides the events and organising, we ourselves will be blessed by this renewed call for our own personal ‘Pursuit of Holiness’
  3. Pray that this will be used of the Lord to spark a nation-wide awareness and consciousness of ‘The Pursuit of Holiness’. Remembering the injunction from the Lord, ‘Be holy because I am holy‘ 1 Peter 1: 15,16
