A hairdresser and holiness

While having my haircut some weeks ago,my hairdresser suddenly asked me, “Have you heard of Jerry Bridges?” What a strange and surprising question it was. I didn’t expect it at all, and especially not from him.

“Yes! Of course I’ve heard of him - in fact, the Navigators will be hosting his visit when he
comes in August. I am in charge of the publicity!”

He said that he was reading “The Discipline of Grace ” and that he found it so helpful. He said, “Hey be sure to let me know when Jerry Bridges is here.”

In a Discipleship Journal article, “Are you a good Christian?”, Bridges wrote how William Carey on his 70th birthday lamented over his life. Carey, who accomplished great things for God, is often called the father of modern missions. Bridges asked: “How could a man of such remarkable faith, who had accomplished so much for God, lament toward the end of his life over his own sinfulness and shortcomings?

These are not just theoretical questions because Carey’s attitude addresses two significant needs among committed believers: the need for a humble realisation of our own sinfulness, and the need for grateful acceptance of God’s grace.

You are invited to the Robertson memorial service

In a March 1995 personal letter to Jim Chew, Asia Missions Director, Roy Robertson wrote: “My prayer for Singapore today and elsewhere is for men of faith and godliness. Where are they? We must find them, challenge them, direct them, train them…

“I thank the Lord for Roy Robertson - man of faith, rugged pioneer, evangelist, trainer, co-labourer, fellow soldier, and friend,” said Jim.

The Navigators, Singapore will hold a memorial service for its founder Roy Robertson on Sunday, 22 June 2008 at the Navigators headquarters, 4-6:30 p.m.

Join us as we honour our leaders. Let’s come, remember, and give thanks to God for the life and ministry of Roy Robertson and so imitate the faith of our spiritual father. Click for more information.

There will be time for those of us who may want to briefly share our memories or encounters with Roy (and Phyllis who was called home six months before Roy).

To help us plan for the service, please email sita @ navigators.org.sg or call Serene at 63444133 x 107.

Dear Lenny and Beloved family members of Roy Robertson,

Roy and PhyllisWe at the Navigators Singapore share with you the deep sense of loss of a stable pillar and support for our work here in Singapore. As you are aware Roy was our first country leader; he also pioneered the Navigator work here. We are very grateful for Roy’s and Phyllis’ labour of love and sacrifice and their leaving us a spiritual legacy and generations of spiritual children. These men and women not only serve Christ with us the Navigators but also with the church and other organisations at large. The work continues now after more than four decades and this is surely because of the foundations that they laid for us which have impacted not only our nation but the region around us too.

Each time Roy and Phyllis came to Singapore their most recent trip being last July, they would always bring encouragement to individual staff and share their life and work with us. They have continued to colabour with us by publishing their writings through our materials ministry. This brings to the body of Christ focus to what they have given their life faithfully to – Disciplemaking.

Though we were shocked and sad when we heard the news of his passing on to Glory, we are grateful to our Lord for taking him home in such a wonderful way. He rested in his chair and entered into a permanent rest with his Master and Lord whom he and Phyllis served with such a sterling service all these years.

We convey our deepest condolences and will as staff observe a moment of silence at around the same time you have the funeral service for Roy Robertson.

Lovingly,
Thomas Chua
National Director
on behalf of Singapore Navigators

Remembering Roy Robertson

Roy Robertson, founder of The Navigators, Singapore, and many other Navigator works was called home to glory on 8 May 2008. His funeral service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 at 10 am in Texas.

When Roy’s first wife Lois passed away suddenly of an apparent brain aneurism in 1959, Roy wrote what now speaks of his own life and death:

“Humanly speaking, this death of our loved one is a great personal loss.
But through the eye of faith we know that this is not a tragedy.
I firmly believe that death is the crowning event in the life of the Christian.
Death is the time when the saints ‘rest from their labors,’
when they throw off the chains of sin and corruption
and step into the glorious liberty of heaven itself.
What a grand, glad day that will be
for all who have put their trust in Christ!”

View now this six-minute video tribute that will be screened during his funeral service. May our hearts rejoice at a life well lived. May we follow in his footsteps.

Navigator friends are invited to join us as we, The Navigators in Singapore, honour our Lord’s humble servant, and our leader. We will be observing a moment of silence at 11 p.m, Monday, May 19, Singapore time (the time of his funeral in Texas) to thank God for both Roy and Phyllis. We also remember and pray for their extended family and ministries during their time of grief.
