Alumni gathering — a breath of fresh air

Alumni praying for the Navigator ministry

It was a breath of fresh air to see the more than 100 alumni come for our Alumni Inaugural Gathering held this afternoon at the Grand Mecure Roxy Hotel. The alumni brought much energy into the event and also hopes of greater partnership to advance the gospel.

Alumnus Alex Lo said, “We hope to reconnect, build a network, rekindle passion for disciplemaking, refire the vision of the Navigators, know what people are doing, align with what they are keen to explore, or offer, and develop discussions to a point where they are comfortable to partner with us. They might not plug back into the Navigators but they could helm disciplemaking efforts in their own churches, or wherever they are, and become ‘labourers next door to everywhere.

If you are a Navigator alumnus, we’d like to connect with you.

A hairdresser and holiness

While having my haircut some weeks ago,my hairdresser suddenly asked me, “Have you heard of Jerry Bridges?” What a strange and surprising question it was. I didn’t expect it at all, and especially not from him.

“Yes! Of course I’ve heard of him - in fact, the Navigators will be hosting his visit when he
comes in August. I am in charge of the publicity!”

He said that he was reading “The Discipline of Grace ” and that he found it so helpful. He said, “Hey be sure to let me know when Jerry Bridges is here.”

In a Discipleship Journal article, “Are you a good Christian?”, Bridges wrote how William Carey on his 70th birthday lamented over his life. Carey, who accomplished great things for God, is often called the father of modern missions. Bridges asked: “How could a man of such remarkable faith, who had accomplished so much for God, lament toward the end of his life over his own sinfulness and shortcomings?

These are not just theoretical questions because Carey’s attitude addresses two significant needs among committed believers: the need for a humble realisation of our own sinfulness, and the need for grateful acceptance of God’s grace.
